Buy a fabric sofa and it looks its best on the first day. Buy a good leather one and it takes several years to reach its prime, softening, developing a patina and settling into a character that no factory finish can imitate. That capacity to improve rather than deteriorate is why leather remains the choice of people who would rather buy well once, and it explains why leather sofas turn up in family homes decades after they were bought.
The range covers every layout and style. Classic Chesterfields with deep buttoning and rolled arms bring traditional character, while low, clean lined designs suit modern interiors. Corner and L shaped sofas maximise seating in open plan rooms, modular systems let you configure and later reconfigure the arrangement, and recliner models add powered or manual footrests and headrests. Two and three seaters remain the mainstay, often paired with matching armchairs and footstools. Colours have broadened well beyond brown and black to include tan, cognac, grey, cream, deep green and navy.
Leather grade is the single most important thing to understand. Full grain is the top layer with its natural markings intact and is the most durable and characterful. Top grain has been lightly sanded for a uniform look and is slightly more stain resistant. Split leather and bonded leather use the lower layers or reconstituted fibres and are much cheaper, but they wear and peel far sooner. Aniline leather is dyed without a protective coating for a soft natural feel, semi aniline adds light protection, and pigmented leather has a hardwearing surface coating that suits family use. A kiln dried hardwood frame and eight way hand tied or serpentine springs indicate a sofa built to last.
Prices reflect all of this. Bonded leather sofas are the budget option, top grain models sit in the middle, and full grain aniline sofas on hardwood frames represent a substantial but long lasting investment.
Have a look at the range, compare prices and choose a sofa that will still look good in fifteen years.
Full grain is the outermost layer of the hide with its natural texture and markings left intact, making it the strongest and most breathable option, and it develops a patina over the years. Bonded leather is not really a hide at all but leather scraps ground up, mixed with adhesive and bonded to a backing, then given a synthetic surface layer. It looks convincing at first but typically starts cracking and peeling within three to five years of regular use. If longevity matters, the difference in price is worth paying.
In many ways yes, because leather does not absorb spills, odours or dust in the way fabric does, and most accidents wipe straight off. The vulnerability is scratching, so a household with a cat is better off with pigmented or protected leather rather than soft aniline, which marks easily. Light scratches on full grain leather can often be buffed out with a finger or a little conditioner. Choose a mid tone colour, since very dark and very pale leathers both show marks more clearly.
Twice a year is a good rhythm for most sofas, and more often if the room is very dry or the sofa sits near a radiator. Conditioning replaces the natural oils that evaporate over time and is what prevents the surface drying out and cracking. Dust weekly and wipe with a slightly damp cloth as needed, but avoid household cleaners, wet wipes and anything containing alcohol or silicone. Always test a new product on a hidden area first.
Leather conducts heat away from your body faster than fabric, so it feels cool on first contact before quickly warming to body temperature. Thicker, higher quality hides warm up more quickly than thin coated leathers because they hold heat better. Positioning matters too, since a sofa on a cold external wall or a stone floor feels chillier year round. A throw or a couple of textured cushions solves the problem entirely and adds a bit of warmth to the look.
