Ornamental Trees: Structure, Shade and Year Round Interest

A garden without a tree is a garden without a ceiling. Ornamental trees give height, structure and a sense of permanence that no amount of bedding or borders can replicate, and they change through the seasons in a way that keeps a space interesting all year. Whether you want blossom in spring, dappled shade in July, blazing colour in October or coloured stems through the winter, there is a tree sized for your plot.

The range is enormous, so it helps to think about what you want from it. Flowering cherries and crab apples deliver spectacular spring blossom, with crab apples adding autumn fruit that feeds the birds. Japanese maples are unrivalled for autumn colour and suit shady, sheltered corners and large pots. Silver birch offers year round appeal through its white bark and light canopy, which lets planting continue beneath. Amelanchier packs blossom, berries and autumn colour into a compact multi stem shape ideal for smaller gardens. Magnolias make an unforgettable statement, olives and evergreen options such as photinia provide structure through winter, and standard bays and topiary give formal gardens their backbone.

Practical considerations should guide the final choice. Check the eventual height and spread rather than the size in the pot, since a tree that looks charming at 1.5 m may be 12 m in thirty years. Consider the root system in relation to drains, walls and neighbouring boundaries, and note whether the tree tolerates your soil, particularly with maples and magnolias which resent lime. Multi stem forms give a lighter, more naturalistic look than a single clear trunk.

Prices reflect size and years of growth. Small bare root whips are inexpensive, containerised specimens of two or three metres sit in the middle, and mature semi standards, trained topiary and rare cultivars are a significant investment.

Have a look at what is available, compare prices and give your garden the structure it deserves.

Ornamental Trees: What Gardeners Want to Know

A common guideline is to keep the planting distance at least equal to the tree's eventual mature height away from a building, particularly on shrinkable clay soils where roots can affect foundations. For small ornamentals reaching four or five metres, three to five metres from the wall is usually comfortable. Willows, poplars and large forest species need far more space and are best avoided near houses altogether. If you are unsure about clay soil and subsidence risk, it is worth taking professional advice before planting.

Amelanchier lamarckii, Japanese maples, crab apples such as Malus Evereste, ornamental cherries like Prunus Amanogawa with its narrow upright shape, and multi stem birch all stay within sensible bounds. Look for trees described as reaching four to six metres after twenty years rather than their ultimate size. Columnar and fastigiate forms take up very little ground space, which suits narrow plots and boundaries. Container growing also restricts size, though it demands consistent watering and feeding.

Standard trees with a clear trunk usually benefit from a short stake for the first two or three years, fitted low on the trunk at around one third of its height. Staking too high prevents the natural flexing that builds trunk strength, so a low stake is better than a tall one. Use a proper adjustable tree tie with a spacer rather than string or wire, which cuts into the bark as the trunk thickens. Remove the stake once the roots have anchored, typically after two to three growing seasons.

Newly planted trees need thorough watering through their first two summers, and this is where most failures happen. Give around 20 to 30 litres once a week in dry spells rather than a light daily sprinkle, since deep soaking encourages roots to grow downwards. A mulch ring of bark or compost kept clear of the trunk holds moisture and suppresses competing grass. From the third year most established ornamental trees cope on their own except in prolonged drought.
